Effects Already Being Seen in Global Warming

Greenland's less-icy mountains; Climate change (II).(Rising sea levels and the Greenland ice cap)." The Economist (US) 378.8465 (Feb 18, 2006): 77US. Student Resource Center - Gold. Thomson Gale. Centennial High School (MD). 19 Feb. 2007 http://find.galegroup.com/ips/infomark.do?&contentSet=IAC-Documents&type=retrieve&tabID=T003&prodId=IPS&docId=A142159178&source=gale&srcprod=SRCG&userGroupName=elli29753&version=1.0.

"In the past, researchers have used data from planes that fly criss-crossing paths over Greenland to assess the extent of its ice sheets. It is a mammoth undertaking. The Greenland ice sheets cover 1.7m square km--an area only a little smaller than Mexico--and the surface of the ice rises to an altitude of 3km. Not surprisingly, the flights leave some areas unmonitored, and so computer models have been used to fill in the blanks and to estimate the role played by these patches. The conclusion, combining data and models, was that the Greenland ice sheet is relatively stable in the centre, but thinning slowly at the edges."

As you can see Greenland is already seeing some effects from global warming. The melting of Greenland's icebergs and edges was predicted to happen eventually but not this soon and not this fast. This also raises the question that if this scientific prediction has come true then what about all of the other ones. For example, scientists believe that glaciers in the north pole and Antarctica will melt and raise the sea levels which will effect millions of people around the world that live on the coast line.

There are things like hybrid cars that are being manufactured now that help to end global warming. Is there anything else that could help?

Motavalli, Jim. "Clean cars: the next generation.(hybrid vehicles )(Brief article)." E 17.6 (Nov-Dec 2006): 24(1). Student Resource Center - Gold. Thomson Gale. Centennial High School (MD). 30 Jan. 2007 http://find.galegroup.com/ips/infomark.do?&contentSet=IAC-Documents&type=retrieve&tabID=T003&prodId=IPS&docId=A156001712&source=gale&srcprod=SRCG&userGroupName=elli29753&version=1.0.

Hybrid cars are becoming more popular over time. Some might say that they will end global warming. Some people don't know what they are. Hybrid cars help the environment by reducing the amount of carbon dioxide, a harmful greenhouse gas, that is distributed into the air. Hybrid cars use less gas because they are unique. Hybrid cars have an electric motor and a gas motor. the combination of these two help the car to get more miles out of each tank of gas. Many major car companies are producing them and designing newer models every year. They are becoming more and more popular over time.

"It's been a momentous year for cleaner vehicles (see "Getting There: A Guide to Planet-Friendly Cars," Consumer News, July/August 2004). DaimlerChrysler rolled out the first plug-in hybrid, albeit as a test vehicle, and announced it would soon import the fuel-sipping Smart city car. Several more manufacturers, including Ford, added new hybrids to their fleets. And the race to bring a fuel-cell car to market is getting hotter, as Honda and General Motors unveiled the latest versions of their hydrogen prototypes. "

Are There Any "Good" Effects of Global Warming???

Ebell, Myron. "Love Global Warming." Forbes 178.13 (Dec 25, 2006): 38. Student Resource Center - Gold. Thomson Gale. Centennial High School (MD). 20 Dec. 2006 http://find.galegroup.com/ips/infomark.do?&contentSet=IAC-Documents&type=retrieve&tabID=T003&prodId=IPS&docId=A155756887&source=gale&srcprod=SRCG&userGroupName=elli29753&version=1.0.

"Researchers have warned us that a temperature rise of a few degrees will bring about plagues of jellyfish on our shores, more poison ivy in our gardens, maple syrup shortages, drowning polar bears, invasions by hordes of smaller and smaller ants, and a proliferation of new types of crime (at least in Australia). Dry areas will become deserts, wet places malarial swamps. Sea levels will rise faster and, worst of all, the effects will fall hardest on women, minorities, children and the poorest people in the poorest countries.
Yes, rising sea levels, if they happen, would be bad for a lot of people. But a warming trend would be good for other people. At the risk of committing heresy, I'd like to suggest that the debate about climate change include, for once, a fair assessment of the benefits alongside the declamations of harm."

Since I have started researching facts about global warming I have wondered if there are any positive effects of global warming. According to this article there are. Although I'm not to sure that one positive effect, though it is a major positive effect, is worth destroying dozens of other things.

"For example, cold winter storms kill a lot of people. More people die from blizzards and cold spells than from heat waves. Increased death rates usually persist for weeks after the unusually cold temperatures have passed, which suggests that the cold is killing people who would otherwise live into another season at least. Mortality rates during heat waves are just the reverse. The increase ends and often the rate drops below normal as soon as temperatures cool, which suggests that the higher temperatures are killing people who are likely to die soon anyway. It is true that mortality rates from both cold and hot weather have been declining in rich countries for a long time. That's because wealthier societies can adapt and protect themselves better from temperature extremes. But it also appears that deaths from hot weather have been declining more rapidly than those from cold. "

Now don't get me wrong i love the fact that the warmth will save many people in the winter, but global warming will melt glaciers and raise see levels to a dangerous height. this will cause islands which are populated to flood and destroy thousands of homes and hurt people. although the article does answer my question i was looking for more positive effects then just one.

ideas to help prevent global warming.

Fisher, Daniel. "When Pigs Fly.(effects of global warming)." Forbes 178.12 (Dec 11, 2006): 62. Student Resource Center - Gold. Thomson Gale. Centennial High School (MD). 12 Dec. 2006 http://find.galegroup.com/ips/infomark.do?&contentSet=IAC-Documents&type=retrieve&tabID=T003&prodId=IPS&docId=A155053730&source=gale&srcprod=SRCG&userGroupName=elli29753&version=1.0.

This article has some pretty cool ideas on how to prevent or at least slow down global warming. the UN for the past few years has run programs to insist on lowering gas emissions of global warming gases. The basic idea on how this is done is by letting the less fortunate countries cell credits to the richer countries. The money that less fortunate countries receives can go towards the building of specialized systems built byAgCert. The system collects methane gas from rotting pig manure farms in Mexico, Chile, and Brazil. Then burns it off or uses it to generate electricity. that will produce carbon dioxide which is a global warming gas, but it is far less harmful then methane gas. There are also other projects that are being tested to help slow down global warming. For example, there is a project that will try to generate electricity from rice husks in Cambodia. Also in Nepal scientists are trying to transform waste into cooking fuel.

My Thoughts

I think that it is great what they are trying to do with slowing down global warming. Although limiting the project regarding the methane into carbon dioxide should try to bemore broad and try to change other gases as well as methane. I also think that the waste idea into cooking fuel should be experimented with not only in terms of cooking fuel but other types of fuel. Maybe for cars or lighting, but it should not be limited to cooking.

Questions???

- How much might the machine cost for the countries to use on the pig farms.
- What other gases are harmful to the environment
- What will be effected by global warming

first artifact

African glaciers melting.(AFRICA)(Brief article)." Earth Island Journal 21.4 (Wntr 2007): 5(1). Student Resource Center - Gold. Thomson Gale. Centennial High School (MD). 8 Dec. 2006 http://find.galegroup.com/ips/infomark.do?&contentSet=IAC-Documents&type=retrieve&tabID=T003&prodId=IPS&docId=A152334945&source=gale&srcprod=SRCG&userGroupName=elli29753&version=1.0.

This is proof that global warming is effecting us now. Not in the next few years, but it has been for a while. According to this article global warming has been going on for at least ten years. The article is talking about Glaciers in Rwenzori Mountains in Congo-Uganda border. Scientists have been recording the glaciers size for the past ten years and have noticed that the glaciers have been shrinking at an average rate of 32 feet per year. If this information is true then the glaciers will disappear within the next 20 years. Scientists believe that the melting is do to the temperature increase over the last 40 years.

Here is what I think is odd about these facts. Global warming is supposedly do to the green house gas emissions from our daily lives, Africa of all places will be most effected by global warming. Africa in my opinion is the country that would create and produce the least amount of gases that would cause global warming.

What I know.......... hahaha good question

What Do I Know About Global Warming

-We are causing global warming, and by that I mean the pollution that we create with all of the things that we do is causing global warming
-The ozone is deteriorating
- The earth is getting increasingly hotter
- ice caps are melting and scientists think that in the years to come the earth will become submerged or close to it
